Showreel 2024 - 2025

A Body Bleeds More Than It Contains | Single Channel Video | 5.1 Sound | 00:27:14 | 2026 Commissioned and produced by Colomboscope, with additional support from the Mondriaan Fund. A Body Bleeds More than it Contains unfolds in response to the demolition of Bari Studios, one of the oldest film studios in Pakistan, where countless Lollywood films have been made since its founding in the late 1950s, including most of Mahmood’s own work over the past decade. Long a site of labour, rehearsal, and collective imagination, the studio had already been reduced by half when this work was filmed. The project took place within the remaining structures, holding onto what was still standing while addressing what had already disappeared. Conceived as a one-day procession and realised as a video installation, the work brings together actors, technicians, musicians, and workers associated with the studio. Through movement, voice, rhythm, and gesture, participants form a procession of creative acts: learned skills, performed stories, and unperformed narratives. The procession moves toward a site that no longer exists, ending at a door now closed to filmmaking. The knowledge carried in these bodies belongs not only to films that were made, but also to many that were never realised—projects interrupted by the prolonged decline of the film industry. What is performed in the work is thus part of an expanded filmography: gestures, techniques, and imaginaries shaped across decades, sustained beyond production. Positioned between disappearance and continuation, the work reflects on how knowledge persists when its architectures are repeatedly undone. Since the filming, the remaining part of Bari Studios has also been demolished, leaving a community of makers without a site of work. With the studio now entirely gone, the film itself becomes a form of remembrance. Mahmood’s practice approaches erasure as a generative condition: each time we are forced into disappearance, another form is produced. A Film by Basir Mahmood Cast & Participants Sultana Bila S.
